William and Margaret (McWilliams) Bates
William Bates (1847 - 1923)
William Bates was born on March 31, 1847 to Samuel and Mary (McKee) Bates. He lived in his hometown of Newtownstewart, County Tyrone, Northern Ireland until November 1865 when he boarded a ship from Londonderry, Ireland to the United States. He lived in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and then Brooklyn, New York. William became a naturalized citizen on September 30, 1873 in Philadelphia. By 1875 William was living in Brooklyn, New York and working as a cashier for an insurance company with his brother, Joseph. William married Margaret McWilliams 26 September 1878. The couple had two sons, Louis and Arthur. William died on 30 March 1923 in Brooklyn. He was laid to rest on 1 April 1923 in the Greenwood Cemetery, Brooklyn, Kings County, New York. [8]
William is described as 5 feet 10 inches tall, with a high forehead, grey eyes and fair complexion.
Margaret “Maggie”(McWilliams) Bates
Margaret was born in Newfoundland in about 1846, the daughter of John and Margaret McWilliams. In 1860 Margaret was living in Brooklyn, Kings County, New York with her parents and 3 sisters.
